On the 27th January 2006, the
Stop TB Partnership launched the Second Global Plan to Stop TB, a 10-year programme with the strategic goal of cutting TB mortality and prevalence in half (in comparison to 1990) by 2015. The Global Plan was created by the members of the Stop TB Partnership, a network of more than 400 organisations dedicated to eliminating the disease as a major public health issue. To attain the goals of the Global Plan, new tools to diagnose, treat and prevent TB, and novel public health strategies to reduce TB in populations with high HIV prevalence, will be developed. The mainstay of prevention is a new, safe, effective and affordable vaccine, which is planned to be available by 2015. It will likely have a considerable impact on the future fight against tuberculosis. However, indications are that this new vaccine will not replace the BCG vaccine but will act as a complement.
