Yellow fever hits Sudan and Mali

A yellow fever outbreak in Sudan  has so far affected 530 persons, leaving 131 dead, with a case fatality rate of 25.2%. Mali, has seen a case fatality rate of 43.4% with 23 deaths from 53 suspected cases, although the disease is not as widespread as in Sudan.

Vaccination with a safe and highly effective yellow fever vaccine is the best way to prevent yellow fever. However, since the illness is spread through the bite of the Aedes mosquito, it is also important to control the mosquito vectors.
